Ik had van mijn reisagent een VOA ontvangen www.youngpioneertours.com Ik dacht dat we met een kleine groep zouden reizen maar YPT gaf dat niet aan en uiteindelijk waren we met 20 deelnemers wat ik als teveel aanzie. Met die VOA kreeg ik in Asmara mijn visum voor een maand mits betalen van 80 $.

Eritrea: It is not possible for foreigners to get a SIM card in Eritrea. In case of an emergency, it will be possible to use our partner’s landline. Wifi is available in Eritrea but it is some of the worst networks we’ve experienced in the world. In all but the most expensive establishments, WIFI is timed and paid for. You can buy at hotel receptions, or at internet cafes a small paper slip with a login and password which will give you one hour of internet access for about $1USD. The best time to use the internet is when most of the population is sleeping, past 10:00pm and before 5:00am. Most social medias such as Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and so on are blocked in Eritrea. To use them, you will need to install a VPN on your computer or phone before arriving in the country.

Tour Advice
Eritrean Visa:
YPT provides visa on arrival for majority of nationalities entering by flight to Asmara the capital of Eritrea. 1. You will need to email YPT your colour passport scan. 2. An LOI will be emailed to you before your tour commences. You will need to show this document before boarding your flight to Asmara as well as on arrival. 3. You will need to bring 2 printed out colour visa photos of yourself with a white background. 4. Once arriving at the airport will need to pay for the visa fee before going through passport control. The cost is $80USD. US bank notes must be new, clean and crisp. Torn, old or dirty notes will be rejected.
Flights
A handful of airlines operate to Eritrea’s capital, Asmara. These include : Egypt Air, from Cairo, Eritrean Airlines, from Khartoum and Jeddah, FlyDubai from Dubai, Nova Airways and Sudan Airways, from Khartoum, Turkish Airways from Istanbul, and last the most useful/reliable one: Ethiopian Airways from Addis Ababa.
Our recommendation is to fly with Ethiopian Airways, which is well connected to the rest of the world and offers the shortest flight to Asmara.
Tour Meeting and Hotel
You will be picked up from Asmara airport and transferred to your hotel. Please let us know your flight details so we can arrange your driver to meet you.
Clothing:
Pack clothes for all weather conditions. The weather in Asmara can be a bit chilly in the evenings, however in Massawa will be much warmer.
If you are attending the Independence Day ceremony, please wear semi-formal clothes. There is no super-formal dress code, but wearing appropriate clothes to show your respect for this special occasion is very much appreciated.
Additionally, if you’re visiting Massawa please bring swimwear, as we will have an opportunity to go swimming.
Female travelers don’t have to worry too much about dress code in general, but please avoid wearing mini-skirts, shorts or sleeveless clothes. Our advice is to bring a scarf in your daypack which you can use to cover your body/shoulders when needed.
Currency:
There are no international ATMs and credit cards are not accepted; bring USD or EURO to exchange into Eritrean Nafka. We will take and assist you to exchange cash so you can get the best rates. We recommend $200 – $300 in spending cash.
Daily Costs:
Please note that the exchange rate of Nakfa is very unstable even in the black market, and the prices listed constantly change. However, rough prices for the following items as follows:
Meal: $7/$10
Beers: $2-$5
Soft Drink: $1
Water: $0.50 – $1
Cigarettes: $3
We also encourage you to set aside a tip for the local guide/s to give at the end of the tour, which is the local custom and, as such, is somewhat expected.
Power Supply and Recharging:
Eritrea commonly uses the 2 round-pin power points, however it is advised to bring a universal adaptor.
As with most developing countries, black outs do occur from time to time. It is advised to bring a flashlight or head torch as a precaution. Packing a power bank for your phone is also advised.
Communication:

Bus Trips:
There will be some long rides included on the tour; whist we do arrange comfortable vehicles with AC, it is recommended to bring the following (especially if you like to nap) to ensure the most comfortable ride:

We can expect long and bumpy rides. Group members prone to motion sickness would be well advised to bring medicine.
Health & Travel Insurance:
The following information must be viewed as a guide only. It is not intended, nor implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice.
It may take some time to adjust to the high altitude and low oxygen levels of Asmara and surrounds. If you suffer from heart ailments or high blood pressure, it is recommended you seek medical advice prior to travelling to this area.
Ensure vaccinations are up to date. Below is an example of what you should be vaccinated for:
– Diphtheria & Tetanus
– Hepatitis A & B
– Measles, Mumps & Rubella
– Polio
– Typhoid
– Varicella
– Rabies
Yellow Fever
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to travelers who are arriving from or having passed through countries with risk of yellow fever transmission or have transited more than 12 hours through the airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.
Failure to produce a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate may result in being placed in quarantine or refused entry.
The mosquito-borne diseases Malaria, Dengue Fever, and Filariasis are endemic in many areas of Eritrea, as well as water-borne, food-borne and other infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, cholera, hepatitis, schistosomiasis, meningococcal disease and tuberculosis.
There have also been ongoing outbreaks of polio in countries across the Horn of Africa.
We recommend you take measures to avoid mosquito bites, including using insect repellent at all times and wearing long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing.
Even though we bring you to “places your mother would rather you stay away from”, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are dangerous places! For many reasons though, we do strongly recommend that travellers to all our destinations have travel insurance.
Further, in the case of serious treatment (such as surgery) being necessary, the United Nations recommends evacuation by air for treatment in a more developed country. This can cost upwards of 20,000 euro just for the airlift. Of course, such situations are rare, but accidents or medical conditions can happen anywhere and it’s best to be prepared.
Theft and other crimes against foreigners are not unheard of in Eritrea and people should not walk alone at night time. You should also have your valuables insured. The right policy can also help you recover some of the cost if you need to cancel your trip at late notice, protectyour valuable equipment, protect you from personal liability, provide emergency dental coverage and more.

Mijn vlucht op 24/05/2023 van Asmara naar Addis had een layover in Addis van 13 uren en mijn connectie voor Juba was om 21 uur op 25/05/2023.

REISVERSLAG
Dag 1 – maandag 22 mei 2023
Ik had met de groep een vlucht van Addis naar Asmara om negen uur zonder vertraging! We zijn ingecheckt in het Asmara Star Hotel www.asmarastarhotel.com 07113237/07628882 in Sawa Street 18 Gejeret. We maakten een korte wandeling om onze lunch te nemen in het Ghibabo Restaurant, een mooi interieur en gezellig. Ik zat aan tafel met een Eritreer waar ik een goed gesprek mee had. Ik bestelde een fles bier zonder etiket. Het blikje “Asmara” is gebrouwen van het Nderlandse Bavaria en is niet drinkbaar. Na mijn lunch ging ik een kijkje nemen in de bar en de eigenaar zat er in een smaakvol antiek interieur. Ik kreeg een machiato aangeboden. Daarna hebben we een tijdje in het centrum gelopen langs de in Italiaanse stijl gebouwde kathedraal. De Imperio cinema is eveneens zuiver Italiaans. De helft van de Eritreers zijn katholiek, er is weinig mosliminvloed te zien. Na de lunch rijden we met twee busjes naar Masawa. We zijn met teveel voor twee busjes en er wordt ergens een personenwagen gecharterd die ik deel met een Noor en een Duitser. We rijden langs een Italiaanse spoorwegviadukt van de lijn Asmara-Masawa. De goede asfaltweg uit 1905 kronkelt door een prachtig berglandschap. Ergens onderweg bij een bergpas zitten apen die onbedeesd op ons afkomen als we stoppen om hen te fotograferen. Soms rijden we langs een bergdorp waar de tijd niet schijnt door te lopen. Ik ken italiaans en doe de chauffeur stoppen bij een oud thermaal station “Fonte Acqua Termale” dat reeds lang verlaten is. Na vijf uur koen we aan in Masala in het donker. We stoppen meteen in een oude wijk bij een Jemanitisch restaurant waar we in open lucht lekker verse vis met plat brood krijgen. De huizen in de omgeving doen oud Ottomaans aan. We checken laat in bij Hotel Dahlak na de brug en aan zee gelegen. De luidruchtige Amerikanen in de groep eten er duur junkfood op het terras. Met nog twee reisvrienden gaan we een biertje drinken in het prachtig oud centrum.
Dag 2– dinsdag 23 mei 2023
Bij de haven lopen we onder kollonade van zuilen om ons te beschermen voor de zon; er blijft nog een restant van winkeltjes, vergane glorie. Mannen drinken er een koffie op een terras zoals in Italië. Er wordt ook gefietst want lang niet iedereen heeft een auto. Van wat ooit een prachtig groot koloniaal gebouw, de Banca d’Italia, is geweest blijft niet veel meer over; het werd hevig beschoten en is een ruïne. We verkennen het bouwval. Het standbeeld van de voormalige Keizer Haile Selasie van Ethiopië werd neergehaald. Na een lange oorlog heeft Eritrea zich kunnen bevrijden van Ethiopië. De oude grote moskee is gevrijwaard gebleven van schade maar verder ligt overal puin en wonen mensen in vernielde gebouwen. Het moskeetje waar een sheikh begraven ligt is eveneens vrijwel schadevrij. In de hoofdstraat staan enkele oude ottomaanse huizen met bewerkte deuren in hout. Wat ooit het Imperial Palace van de Ethiopische keizer is geweest blijft niet veel meer over, het is geplunderd en bouwvallig. Toch leuk om door de ruïnes te lopen. Na onze lunch in het Saliem Kesete spaghetti en pizzarestaurant in Hornet Street gaan we een boottocht maken naar het Green Island in de Dahlak Archipelago. Er is geen beschutting en de zon prikt ons ongenadig, mijn kleren zijn doorweekt van het zweet. Ik verken vlug het strand waar men goed kan duiken maar verkies de schaduw van een ruïne bij de oude kapotte pier. Tegenover de Dahlak-eilanden ligt de kleine haven Van Masawa. Eenmaal op de boot voelen we de heilzame bries van de zee. In de stad bezoeken we nog het War Memoroal met een Ethiopische tank. Daarna rijden we terug naar Asmara over de prachtige bergen. De Italianen hebben een spoorweg aangelegd en soms rijden we over nog uitstekende bruggen. Onderweg stoppen bij een prachtige uitkijkpost bij een wegrestaurant Nefasit. Moedige Eritresa renners banen zich een weg door de bergen en duimen naar ons. Eenmaal terug in Asmara gaan we een Italiaans kerkhof bezoeken van militairen en Italiaanse burgers waarvan de laatsten zijn overleden in 1975 volgens de grafopschriften. Er is een mooi park erbij. Vervolgens begeven we ons naar het bekend “Tank Graveyard” letterlijk een metershoge opeenstapeing van vernielde legercamions, tanks, kanonnen en allerlei oorlogsmateriaal. Het is bijzonder en imposant. Voor de lokale kinderen een gedroomd speelpark. We nemen onze intrek in het Asmara Star Hotel en verkennen erna nog wat het centrum bij de Imperio Cinema.
Dag 3 – woensdag 24 mei 2023
Het is vandaag nationale feestdag in Eritrea. Na ons ontbijt verkennen we de stad en bezoeken eerst het bekend “Taglietero Fiat”, de oude Fiat garage. Ik heb geen enkele auto van Fiat gezien, bijna uitsluitend Toyota. In de voormalige werkplaatsen was er gisteren een feest en er hangen enkele merkwardige posters aan de muur. Hier staan kinderen met nationale vlaggen en dito klederdracht die graag voor ons poseren. Tegenover het Tagliero Fiat ligt een shopping Center. Groepen schoolkinderen in uniform lopen uitbundig door de straat met vlaggen en spandoeken. Overal staan nog koloniale gebouwen die herinneren aan de Italiaanse periode. Tot mijn verbazing lopen we plots voorbij het consulaat van België. Uiteraard bezoekn we de nostalgische Cinema Roma waar nog oude projectoren van zestig jaren geleden staan, een oude bar en filmzaal en oude posters. Hier is de tijd blijven stilstaan. Op straat zitten mensen rijendik geduldig te wachten op de optocht van Independance Day. Daarna bekijken we het oude theatergebouw uit de koloniale tijd en overal hangt de nationale vlag. Het kleine postgebouw kunnen we niet bezoeken, gesloten vandaag. De universiteit is klein en oud en is eveneens gesloten. Vervolgens bezochten we het Hote Asmara uit 1988 www.albergoitalianaasmara.com Het interieur is oriineel antiek en je voelt er nog de oude Italiaanse koloniale sfeer. Ik zou er beslist willen logeren. Plots is gids Rowan met een groepje verdwenen en we betrapen ze later op een gezellig terrasje met een capuchino of machiato. Er zijn nog veel tyische oud-koloniale cafeetjes en restaurants in Asmara. De groep trekt vervolgens naar een sportzaal waar ze bowlen of biljarten terwijl er buiten een parade in de straten loopt om de onafhankelijkheid van het land te vieren. Een beetje spijtig vanwege YPT.
