Wij waren er op 12/09/2017 om tien uur en konden ons visum afhalen dezelfde dag om 13 uur. Een visum kost wel 100 $ ! Na 13 uur konden we met een busje niet meer in Harar raken, wat onze bedoeling was.
Men kan ook een visum verkrijgen bij aankomst op luchthaven in Hargeisa ( te controleren of dat nog klopt)

Inreisdocumenten 2023:
Ik heb een combinatiereis geboekt bij Young Pioneer Tours: Djibouti, Somaliland en Eritrea. Ik heb dat vooral gedaan omdat een visum voor Eritrea moeilijk te bekomen is en ik dacht dat ik met een kleine groep zou reizen wat niet wordt medegedeeld door https://www.youngpioneertours.com/ Na enkele weken krijg ik een groepsLOI van hun incoming agent in Hargeisa www.visithornafrica.com waarop 27 deelnemers en twee gidsen staan. Ik voel mij wat bedrogen door YPT. Met die LOI kon ik makkelijk mijn visum krijgen op de luchthaven van Hargeisa, kost 60 $.

Van Djibouti centrum tot de grens met Somaliland in Loyada is het slechts 23,5 km, een ritje van een half uur. Van Djibouti naar Hargeisa kan men vliegen in één uur ofwel over de weg in 7.30 uur, 412 km.

Vlucht 2020
Nationale luchtvaartmaatschappij. Vliegt regionaal naar Berbera, Somaliland en Mogadishu, Somalia. Vliegt niet naar Asmara. De vlucht van Addis naar Djibouti, via Dire Dawa, kost 324 € voor een vlucht van 2.30 uur. Met Kenian kost het 177 € zonder stop voor anderhalf uur vliegen. Over de weg van Addis naar Djibouti duurt het 11 uren. Geen vlucht van Addis of Djibouti naar Asmara. Vlucht heen en terug met Air Djibouti van Djibouti naar Berbera, Somaliland, kost ongeveer 215 $. Een vlucht heen en terug uit Djibouti naar Mogadishu met Air Djibouti kost ongeveer 470 $.
Een enkele vlucht op vb. 20/08/17 van Djibouti (JIB) naar Hargeisa (HGA) kost 125 $, 45 minuten vliegen.

Vlucht 2023
Gezien ET niet vliegt van Djibouti naar Hargeisa en www.air-djibouti.com het monopoly schijnt te hebben op hun luchthaven moet ieder deelnemer zelf zijn vlucht boeken en betalen. Onze enkele vlucht van amper 40 minuten kost 205 $ ! Op 21 mei zou mijn vlucht dat in mijn vluchtplan zit van ET op de middag vertrekken maar het werd verlaat naar 18.10 uur en we moesten urenlang in een zaaltje wachten. We kregen heel laat en mits aandringen iets te eten van ET. Het is een verloren dag dank zij ET, Ethiopian Airlines. Ze schrappen regelmatig vluchten of verlaten die, geen al te beste luchtvaartmaatschappij. We kregen een voucher voor een minderwaardig hotel in Addis en vertrekken op 22 mei in de morgen naar Asmara.

Arrival in Djibouti: E-visa / Visa on Arrival
Once you arrive at Djibouti International Airport make your way to immigration. Please present the immigration with a physical copy of your e-visa in colour. If you have opted for visa on arrival prepare 2 visa photos, and $25 cash.
You will be required to show your COVID vaccination card or a PCR test within 72 hours.
Afterwards collect your bags and make your way to the exit sign where you your driver will await you holding a YPT sign or a sign with your name. Note: If the luggage area is too congested, the guides/drivers are made to wait at the exit. You will then be taken to either our hotel or the hotel you have booked prior to the group tour commencing if you have arrived earlier.
Once you arrive at our hotel, please present your passport to check-in. The hotel staff will assist you.
Camping 1 night in Djibouti:
You will be provided with tents and mattresses for the evening. However, you’re required to bring your own pillow and sheets. A light travel pillow or neck pillows are a quick fix. Best to prepare sunscreen, mosquito repellent and a head torch. There are shared showers and toilet facilities available but it’s advised to wait until we’re back in Djibouti city for a shower as the tank water can be dirty.
Arrival in Somaliland: Visa on Arrival
Attached is a Somaliland visa form you’ll need to fill out by pen and bring with you on tour. Our hotel in Hargeisa is Damal Hotel. You will need to bring your printed Somaliland LOI which is attached to this email, as well as 2 visa photos, and $60 to obtain your visa on arrival. Your YPT guides will assist you to the hotel.
You will be required to show your COVID vaccination card or a PCR test within 72 hours. If you need a PCR test please inform me so we can prepare this for you in Djibouti before your departure. PCR test is $30: subject to change.
For all Australians and Kiwis, you are not eligible for visa on arrival in Somaliland and your visa will be prepared whilst we are in Djibouti. Rowan will collect your passport, 2 visa photos and $60 visa fee from you. Again, these fees are subject to change.
Arrival in Eritrea: Visa on Arrival – UPDATE: Eritrean LOIs still being processed – please wait
Once you receive your Eritrean LOI by email from us, you will need to show your printed LOI, 2 visa photos and $70 – $80 to obtain your visa on arrival in Asmara. Your YPT guides will assist you to the hotel.
You will be required to show your COVID vaccination card or a PCR test within 72 hours. If you need a PCR test please inform me so we can prepare this for you in Somaliland before your departure. PCR test is $45: subject to change. If you need one for outgoing flights PCR cost in Eritrea is $100.
Cash:
Cash is king in this part of Africa, and USD is widely accepted everywhere. US bank notes must be new, clean and crisp. Torn, old, inked, stamped, or dirty notes will be rejected by locals or given a much lower value. EUR is not openly accepted in most places.
Most places will accept USD cash directly, but in each country your YPT guides will assist with you exchanging into local currency for convenience when paying for meals or other items.
Daily Costs:
Djibouti: all meals during the group tour are covered in Djibouti. Beers can be between $2 to $5, water under $1. I recommend bringing $100 extra to cover your stay.
Please note: if the Air Djibouti flight from Djibouti City to Hargeisa is cancelled – Plan B is to take 4x4s across the border to Hargeisa. The cost of this is $205 (same cost as the flight). Please bring this extra amount of cash JUST IN CASE this situation unfortunately develops.
Somaliland: Lunches and dinners are from $7 to $10 per meal. Soft drinks and water around $1. I recommend bringing $200 to $300 to cover your stay.
Eritrea: Lunches and dinners are from $7 to $10 per meal. Soft drinks and water around $1. I recommend bringing $200 to $300 to cover your stay.
Tips: We also encourage you to set aside a tip for the local guide/s to give at the end of the tour,
which is the local custom and, as such, is somewhat expected. $5 to $10 per day for your guide, and $2 to $4 per day for your driver or camp cooks.
Photography:
Please always listen to the advice of your guides when it comes to photos. Strictly no photos of military installations, active military vehicles, military personal, police or checkpoints. Doing so may result in confiscation of your camera or smart phone.
Communications:
Djibouti: WIFI will be available at our accommodation in Djibouti but not at the camp site. One company has the monopoly on communications in Djibouti, Djibouti Telecom. Prices are still reasonable, with a SIM card setting you back 1000 DJF ($6) and a 3 day 1 GB plan 500 DJF ($3). There is no stable cell network available outside of Djibouti city.
Somaliland: WIFI is available at hotels. Somaliland has surprisingly good and cheap mobile data. A SIM card costs from $1USD and must be registered at the Somtel office. You can get bundles of 300MB or 20 minutes of talktime for $1USD. However network is not stable outside of the capital.
Eritrea: It is not possible for foreigners to get a SIM card in Eritrea. In case of an emergency, it will be possible to use our partner’s landline. Wifi is available in Eritrea but it is some of the worst networks we’ve experienced in the world. In all but the most expensive establishments, WIFI is timed and paid for. You can buy at hotel receptions, or at internet cafes a small paper slip with a login and password which will give you one hour of internet access for about $1USD. The best time to use the internet is when most of the population is sleeping, past 10:00pm and before 5:00am. Most social medias such as Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and so on are blocked in Eritrea. To use them, you will need to install a VPN on your computer or phone before arriving in the country.
Travel within the Horn of Africa: MUST READ
The term TIA might sound familiar to you (This is Africa). It means that sometimes things don’t go as planned without any clear reasons. Tourism in this region of Africa is basically non-existent. That means we are experiencing countries in its purest form, but this also means that things don’t always go as planned. Delays, closures, sudden changes are not uncommon. While we provide the best local guides we can for a tour like this, even they can’t always help it. We therefore ask you to travel with an open mind and be flexible with us. Also please note Eritrea is still incredibly COVID conscious and some strict regulations remain in place with large crowd gatherings which may hinder our involvement with the Independence Day celebrations and events. Eritrea is one out of two countries that did not attempt to vaccinate their population at all. The other country is North Korea.
We’ll always try our best the make the most out of it but sometimes things are out of our hands. However, this also makes this trip incredibly special for travelling.

Another alternative way of obtaining a Somaliland visa is to visit the office in Addis Ababa before your tour. Please note that the office is open from Monday to Friday. You will need two visa-type photos and around $100USD (depending on nationalities and the mood of the staff). Other officers can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_representative_offices_of_Somaliland Flights: A handful of airlines operate to Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport, although not all of them fly regularly. Those include Air Djibouti, from Djibouti City, Daallo Airlines, from Somalia and a few other places, Air Arabia, from Sharjah (UAE) and finally Ethiopian Airlines, from Addis Ababa. Our recommendation is to fly with Ethiopian Airlines, Air Arabia or Flydubai. If you cannot get your visa on arrival or before arriving in Africa, we recommend flying to Addis Ababa first, getting your visa and flying to Hargeisa again. Tour Meeting and Hotel: You will be picked up from Hargeisa airport and transferred to your hotel. Please let us know your flight details so we can arrange your driver to meet you. Clothing: The weather in Somaliland can be quite hot so pack accordingly. Men are fine to wear short sleeved shirts, but trousers are a must. Shorts are frowned upon. Women should wear “modest” clothing, including long trousers or long skirt and no sleeveless clothes or uncovered shoulders. Women should also wear a headscarf to show respect to the local culture. Any footwear is allowed including open toed shoes or sandals. We will go to a gorgeous beach on the Red Sea coast; however, women will be required to wear long clothes on top of swimwear. Men can wear shorts for the swim. Currency: Credit cards are not accepted, USD is the most accepted foreign currency to exchange into Somaliland Shilling. Your guide will take you to a currency exchange and assist you in exchanging cash. We recommend to bring $200 – $300 with you for this trip. There are ATMs in Hargeisa which give USD, however, fees on these ATMs are extremely high and if you plan on using them, please tell your bank in advance to prevent your account from being frozen. These days, most places will gladly accept USD and give you change in Somaliland Shillings, which means that you do not need to change all your USD into Somaliland Shillings. Please bring small notes. Daily Costs: In terms of spending money in Somaliland, it depends on how much you like to drink, and how many gifts you would like to buy. REISVERSLAG
Dag 1 – woensdag 17 mei 2023
We zijn heel vroeg opgestaan want we hebben reeds een vlucht om zeven uur. Een enkel vluchtje met Air Djibouti naar Hargeisa duurt slechts veertig minuten maar kost we 205 $ want ze hebben het monopoly voor vluchten in/uit Djibouti. We hebben allen een groepVOA, vullen een formulier in en mits betalen van 60 $ krijgen we vlot ons visum voor een land dat officieel niet bestaat en niet erkend is. We krijgen van Immigratie op Egal Airport netjes een ontvangstbewijs. Buiten de luchthaven staat de groep wat onwennig te wachten op het busje. We worden naar ons hotel gebracht: info@damalhotel.com +252 65 3399000, kamer kost 70 $. Na een kort inchecken gaan we Hargeisa bezoeken met een busje. Ik wissel bij een geldwisselaar op straat aan een voordelige koers van 8.500 SOS/USD en krijg een stapel SOS. Geldwisselaars zitten naast elkaar met grote stapels geld voor zich en zonder bewaking. Het is een beetje hektisch in Hargeisa maar het valt nogal mee. We rijden tot onze verbazing voorbij een winkel van Ikea. We stoppen bij het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken www.somalilandmfa.com en worden uitgenodigd in het Hargeisa Cultural Center voor een korte uiteenzetting over het land en krijgen zowaar toeristische dokumentatie over wandelen www.redsea-online.com en een fotoboek met vermelding van 142 archeologische sites in het land. Tenslotte werd een dans uitgevoerd door een groep in nationale klederdracht. Daarna wandelen we naar het Goljanno Restaurant waar we in een brede kring op matten op de grond zitten en genieten van een rijke maaltijd met ook kamelenvlees. Onze rekening liep op tot 2.865.000 SOS ! We bezochten een Brits oorlogskerkhof toen het hier nog “British Somaliland Protectorate” heette. Buiten de stad konden we twee identieke heuvels zien liggen in een vlakte wat Somiland overwegend is. We staan op ongeveer duizend meter hoogte en de heuvels zijn vierhonderd meter hoger. Ze heten Naaso Hablood, meisjesborsten en zijn een landschappelijk kenmerk. Daarna verkenden we het centrum waar het druk en uitbundig was; iedereen was in een roes voor het onafhankelijkheidsfeest morgen; er werden overal nationale vlaggen en souvenirs verkocht.
Dag 2– donderdag 18 mei 2023
We ontbijten reeds om zes uur en daarna lopen we naar de parade voor de nationale feestdag zo’n kilometer verder onder politieescorte waar we langs de weg een goede plaats krijgen toegewezen. De mensen zijn uitbundig van vreugde en dragen meestal kledij in de nationale kleuren, overal wapperen vlaggen en spandoeken. Er is een grote aanwezigheid van politie en militairen om alles in goede banen te leiden bij deze grote mensenmassa. De gewone mensen stonden te kijken achter tralies of werden verjaagd. De optocht duurde nogal lang en leek eindeloos: groepen van verscheidene militaire eenheden en politie, brandweer, het Rode Kruis, verpleegsters, scouts, een judogroep, steltlopers, ruiters en veel meer. Ik vermoed dat ik het ganse wapenarsenaal van het land gezien heb. Na afloop werden we bijna vertrappeld omdat de menigte zo dicht mogelijk bij de tribunes van de president wou komen. Gelukkig werden we vakkundig weggeleid door een politie-escorte. Uiteraard mochten we een paar keer op de foto met politie en zwaarbewapende militairen. We liepen naar de Sheikh Madar Mosque waar we vriendelijk werden ontvangen en foto’s mochten nemen. De Jama Moskee is netjes opgeknapt na de oorlog en invallen van de Ethiopiërs; het is ook de grootste in Somaliland. Enkele dames verkopen kamelenmalk dat erg gewild is en er zijn standjes met tropisch fruit. Bij het Hargeisa Civil War Memorial op Independance Avenue staat een MIG vechtvliegtuig op een hoge sokkel met er onder een aandenkplaat van de oorlog die leidde naar de onafhankelijkheid. Wij mogen foto’s nemen van omstaanders maar ansersom zijn we ook populair. Ons avondmaal nemen we in Al Jirde met onze groep. Daarna bezoeken we een kleurig belicht optreden van populaire plaatselijke zangers waarbij de lokale schoonheden uit de bol gaan.
Dag 3 – vrijdag 19 mei 2023
We beginnen onze dag vroeg en na ons ontbijt stoppen we bij een supermarkt om wat snacks en drinken te kopen, we kunnen er in USD betalen. We bezoeken eerst de bekende kamelenmarkt waar we rustig foto’s nemen en de dappersten een kameel bij zijn nek kunnen vastnemen voor de foto. De beesten staan er rustig te wachten op een andere eigenaar. Een politieman, de chauffeur, onze gids en een hulpje vergezellen ons naar Las Geel. Onderweg in een desolaat droog landschap bemerken we soms enkele schamele hutjes waar geitenboerjes wonen. Na ongeveer anderhalf uur rijden nemen we een zes km lange slechte grindweg aan 10km/uur naar de bekende rotstekeningen van Las Geel. We waren de enige bezoekers. Na een beetje klimwerk komen we aan bij de bijzonder goed bewaarde rotstekeningen omdat ze op overhangende rotswanden zijn beschilderd en zo van zon en regen zijn beschut. De rotstekeningen van vijfduizend jaar oud zijn lang een lokaal geheim geweest tot ze in 2002 werden “ontdekt” door een Frans archeoligische team. We hebben de site een uur lang bewonderd en het is echt de moeite en niet voor niets door Unesco erkend. Daarna reden we nog een uur door een dor landschap met sporadisch enkele armzalige hutjes. De asfaltweg Hargeisa-Berbera is in perfecte staat. Ergens bij een wegrestaurant konden we lunchen. Aangekomen in Berbera bezochten we eerst de oude gebouwen van de Russen die in de jaren zestig een haven hadden uitgebouwd voor het russisch gezind bewind van Somalië. De sovjetblokken zijn nu bewoond door lokale families. Sedert 1980 voert Somaliland een westers gerichte koers. Daarna bezoeken we de wijk van de Jemenitische visverkopers en we lopen door straatjes met prachtige oude koloniale gebouwen. Het is intussen valavond en ik drong aan bij onze gids om eerst het strand met een prachtige zonsondergang te bezoeken maar de meesten wilden eerst naar het hotel. Het was een prachtige zonsondergang bij de Indische Oceaan. We zijn dan ingecheck in Hotel Mansoor iets buiten het centrum bij de zee gelegen. www.maan-soor.com Normaal kost een kamer 60 $ hier. Ons avondmaal namen we in dit hotel waarna ik met twee andere medereizigers nog eens in het centrum van Berbera ging lopen.
Dag 4 – zaterdag 20 mei 2023
We namen ons ontbijt bij het hotel en daarna zijn we met onze coaster naar het haventje gereden. Ik heb mooie foto’s genomen op de pier van de kleurige vissersbootjes die aangemeerd lagen. Onze groep werd verdeeld in drie groepjes en we vaarden met drie bootjes naar een opgespoten zandbank toen de haven werd aangelegd in 1960. Op de rede lagen enkele schepen te wachten alsof het spookschepen waren. In de haven zijn slechts drie straddle-carriers actief. De luwte van de zee deed deugd bij temperaturen van 35 en hoger. De meesten gingen meteen zwemmen bij het eilandje. Iemand liep richting nabijgelegen vuurtoren maar werd teruggeroepen want het is een strict militaire zone. Terug in het centrum bij de zee gingen we bij het Al-Hayat visrestaurant lunchen en ik koos voor de gegrilde baracuda die bijzonder lekker was. De totale rekening bedroeg 2.231.000 SOS en ieders aandeel bedroeg wel 100.000 ! In onze munt 12 €. Daarna reden we naar het binnenland in een berglandschap en stopten bij de Burti Hills en de Goolis Mountains voor een prachtig panorama op de Sheikh Pass. We ontmoetten er Somali’s uit Mogadishu. Dan kregen we veel panne: onze jeep wou niet starten en de andere had niet genoeg power om over de berg te raken en moest 20 mijlen terug rijden naar Berbera. Wij moesten nog vier uren rijden en ik zat krampachtig met mijn knie tegen de zetel van de bestuurder. Maar wij raakten dan toch in Sheikh 60 km van Berbera over een goede asfaltweg. We bezochten de ruïnes van Ferdusa maar de gids vertelde dat het ging om oude Britse koloniale gebouwen. Het zou gaan om een oud Brits fort toen British Somaliland werd bestuurd van uit Sheikh tot 1905. Het werd inmiddels donker en door onze pannes kwamen we laat aan in Hargeisa. In ons Hotel Damal kon ik nog een laat avondmaal bekomen.
Dag 5 – zondag 21 mei 2023
We mochten wat langer slapen en na ons ontbijt werden we naar de luchthaven gebracht waar we om 12 uur een vlucht hadden naar Asmara. Maar onze vlucht van alweer Ethiopian Airlines werd verlaat naar 18.10 uur. We zaten ons de ganse namiddag te vervelen in de wachtzaal van Hargeisa en moesten zelfs sterk aandringen om een lunch en drinken te bekomen. Door toedoen van Ethiopian verloren we een dag. Bij vertrek kregen we allen een hotelvoucher voor Addis in een minderwaardig hotel met slechte service.
